49ers’ First Loss Makes It Clear: Their Toughest Opponent Is Their Health

Mercedes-Benz Stadium (ATLANTA) — Father Time, we are often told, is undefeated. The 49ers, by no coincidence, are not anymore. San Francisco took its first loss of 2026 on Sunday, and the same core of ageless but still 30-something stars that guided them to a 6-0 record were ultimately part of their first loss. The 33-year-old receiver, who has helped them win with so many other receivers sidelined, missed the game with an Achilles injury. The 30-year-old running back, averaging 16 touches a game, left the game with a thigh injury and missed nearly two quarters. The 33-year-old tight end, coming through with another monster game, fumbled at the end to finish the 49ers’ chances at a last-shot comeback, and acknowledged that the team’s future is fully attached to their overall health. “It’s the NFL. Injuries happen,” George Kittle said, remaining relentlessly positive following the 49ers’ 29-20 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. “It’s just how much depth do you have? How many vets do you have that can stay healthy? That can continue to keep the standard of play up? I think that’s all that really matters.” That’s the reality for a 49ers team that entered Sunday with a three-game lead in what was expected to be the toughest division in the NFL. They have not only the defending champion Seattle Seahawks in their rearview, but also a Los Angeles Rams team that was the consensus favorite to win it all this season. Those two have stumbled to 3-3 and 2-4 records somehow before picking up wins on Sunday, while the 49ers opened 6-0. They did that with an unprecedented core of seasoned veterans surrounding quarterback Brock Purdy. We covered Mike Evans, Christian McCaffrey and Kittle, very likely three Hall of Famers. That doesn’t even count left tackle Trent Williams, who is older than all of them at 38 and still playing at an extremely high level. If those four are all healthy in January, it could get the 49ers to play in February. But Sunday brought another question: What if they’re not healthy? McCaffrey touched the ball on San Francisco’s first four plays, totaling 68 yards on the opening drive, including a 1-yard touchdown. He left on the first play of the second drive, and when rookie Kaelon Black scored a 30-yard touchdown for a 14-3 lead, it looked like Kittle had his answer about depth coming through. Then, Black lost a fumble on the next drive, and that allowed the Falcons to pull within 14-12 at halftime. Black had negative yards in the second half. No Mike Evans? Consider the other receivers the 49ers didn’t have Sunday. Deebo Samuel was also inactive with a hamstring injury, and three more are on injured reserve: Ricky Pearsall, their 2024 first-round pick; De’Zhaun Stribling, this year’s second-round pick; and Demarcus Robinson, 32, who had a touchdown in two games before getting hurt. What’s left? The 49ers got three catches each on Sunday from receivers Jordan Watkins and Jacob Cowing, who entered the game with five career catches each over a combined four seasons. And the 49ers nearly pulled off the win. Down 12 with six minutes to play, Purdy threw a touchdown pass to fullback Kyle Juszczyk, and the offense got the ball back and got into Falcons territory before Purdy threw his second pick of the day. He’d thrown two total in the first six games. Road teams who were minus-4 in turnover margin or worse were 1-32 over the last six NFL seasons (shoutout to the Jacksonville Jaguars for pulling off the lone win last year), and the 49ers had a real shot to change that in the fourth quarter. They didn’t. So is that a single loss on the road to a Falcons team that played mistake-free football, or is it a sign of the vulnerability to come when the Seahawks and Rams pull closer in the standings and bear down on them in December? If the 49ers are as shorthanded as they were today, will they be able to beat those division rivals a second time? Or in the playoffs? This isn’t the way you want to go into a bye week, taking a loss that will linger with nothing to replace it for 13 days. “It’s going to sour everybody’s week,” Kittle said. “Kyle [Shanahan’s] week? He’s probably just angry at the world. I’m not going to be incredibly happy the entire time, but I think that’s good. Would I have rather won? Absolutely. Way more fun. But hey, it could be worse. We didn’t have a bunch of guys get injured today … I think all it’s going to do is spark a bigger fire underneath us. When we get back next week, I think our guys are going to be incredibly focused.” Kittle’s absolutely right. They will be motivated. They will be focused. But the real question, even after a much-needed week of rest and recuperation: Will the 49ers be healthy? Can those core leaders, the guys headed to Canton when they’re done, defy their age, push through the unending aches and pains of playing football in your 30s and stay well enough to just suit up when it means the most? If they can, the 49ers will be a team to fear, much like the one that opened 6-0 and surprised all their doubters. If they can’t, it might look more like Sunday, and a game that slipped away from them despite their best efforts.
